Through Operation Jailbreak Falcon Fury, we officially published the APIs for Blue, our simulation and orchestration platform, on the U.S. Army’s API Marketplace. Any Army organization or industry partner can now ingest our simulation and GEOINT data using an API key.
For context, Operation Jailbreak Falcon Fury is an Integration Sprint hosted by the Army in conjunction with JIATF-401 in support of U.S. Central Command. The initiative’s goal is to expose interfaces for Joint and Coalition systems, integrate systems for distributed fire control, and fundamentally change how the Army connects coalition systems to provide flexible layered sensing.
Coming from backgrounds leading product and engineering teams at Meta and Amazon, the sheer necessity of this initiative seemed a little counterintuitive. In the commercial sector, ingesting vendor data you’ve paid for isn’t a debate; it’s a baseline expectation. Furthermore, opening up product APIs is standard practice to drive adoption and fuel innovation within third-party developer ecosystems. We thought this was standard operating procedure in the defense world as well.
Dr. Alex Miller, the Army CTO explained the history of why this was happening.
“We had a pretty simple goal, and it was to ask all of the vendors that actually provide the national security apparatus to expose interfaces for their systems,” said Miller, the chief technology officer to the Army chief of staff and senior advisor for science and technology.
Miller likened the legacy military integration environment to a home where every appliance needs a unique adapter just to plug in. In the past, the warfighter had to act as that “adapter.” In many tactical operations centers, Soldiers manually gathered data across eight or nine screens.
“What that has unintentionally done over time is forced our people to be the integration point, which is really rough if you’re cold, tired, wet and hungry,” Miller explained. “Now, at the end of the day, you can pipe all of that data into one thing ... and those people can actually be the crew chief for AI rather than part of the machine itself.”
In March, we published a post on how our Blue platform analyzes environments like Kharg Island better than using frontier models alone. That piece reached the right people and quickly led us to build new features for simulating mobile fire teams (MFTs). By modeling variables like sustainment needs and radar gaps, Blue ensures MFTs are deployed to optimal areas. However, our biggest obstacle was the data bottleneck: we lacked integration with sensors and effectors that could enrich these simulations. The Army CTO’s launch of Operation Jailbreak was exactly what we needed to improve our simulations, allowing us to integrate directly with live sensors and effectors deployed in the field.
